OUR STORY
Sanctuary Academy is an affiliate of Acton Academy, which originated in Austin, Texas. Acton Academy is named after Lord Acton. Lord Acton (1834-1902) was a Victorian scholar of Freedom who saw liberty not as a license to do what one wishes, but as the freedom to do what is right. Acton Academy embraces an educational model that "turns learning upside down". Freedoms, rights and responsibilities are entrusted to learners as they are immersed in hands-on, real-world experiences. In order to meet the needs of homeschooling and unschooling families in the area, we offer an Acton Hybrid program (two days a week) as well as an Enrichment Day (one day a week).
Monica Poff
Program Director
Monica has been homeschooling since 2016. It has been a challenging journey with a growing family and managing a part time job. She and her husband Matt are blessed to have six children. She had deeply desired to give their children more consistent opportunities to collaborate with other learners and grow in real-life skills and virtues, which led to the launch of Sanctuary. Monica is also a faith-based counselor and is very passionate about healing, wholeness and health. Monica has experienced her own mental health struggles and believes that we need to support young people in this area by incorporating human formation into their education. She has been so grateful for the opportunity to serve families and approach learning through the whole person approach and with an emphasis on encountering and preparing for Heaven.
Maria Brookens
Program Co-Director
Maria was a public school teacher for ten years. She built a classroom that was learner-driven, before she knew the term! She was often using innovative, creative approaches to education to foster a love for learning in each one of her students. She left teaching to raise a family, and now has two children of her own. She is excited to be co-directing Sanctuary, and serving as the Sparks guide. She is on a lifelong journey of learning, and is currently diving deep into Montessori education. She is passionate about helping moms on the hero's journey of motherhood. She has had to prioritize her own mental health and practice self-care, and wants to lead moms to do the same so that they can offer their best for their families! She desires to build up a community of families embracing a whole-person approach to life and learning, and being "in the world, but not of the world"
