Meet our Team

Program Director
Becca Lyon
Becca is the Program Director at Sanctuary Academy of Dewitt. Collaborating with the leadership team to implement the Acton Academy and learner driven model, all while inspiring our heroes to grow in their six relationship areas has been the most gratifying experience of her career. Becca has spent most of her life in the education field. For many years as an early childhood educator teaching Preschool, and then as a Director in various early childhood environments. She believes in providing the tools and teaching skills to young people in order to help them reach their God given potential. Becca believes every young person is a genius! Becca has been blessed with a beautiful family, including three small children of her own. She is always trying her best to learn new skills and strategies to take home to guide her own children with. She is grateful for the opportunity to serve the Sanctuary Academy community and continue to grow in her own leadership skills. Becca is excited for the future of Sanctuary Academy and the way the Holy Spirit is growing and moving here!

Assistant Program Director
Monica Poff
Monica has been homeschooling since 2016. It has been a challenging journey with a growing family and managing a part time job. She and her husband Matt are blessed to have six children. She had deeply desired to give their children more consistent opportunities to collaborate with other learners and grow in real-life skills and virtues, which led to the launch of Sanctuary. Monica is also a faith-based counselor and is very passionate about healing, wholeness and health. Monica has experienced her own mental health struggles and believes that we need to support young people in this area by incorporating human formation into their education. She has been so grateful for the opportunity to serve families and approach learning through the whole person approach and with an emphasis on encountering and preparing for Heaven.

Lead Guide
Maria Bookens
Maria was a public school teacher for ten years. She built a classroom that was learner-driven, before she knew the term! She was often using innovative, creative approaches to education to foster a love for learning in each one of her students. She left teaching to raise a family, and now has two children of her own. She is excited to be serving as the Sparks Studio Guide implementing, creating and developing the Spark program. She continues to offer leadership and support to the Guides for anything related to the studio environment as our Lead Guide for Sanctuary Academy.
She is on a lifelong journey of learning, consistently educating herself on the Montessori and Acton learning styles and environments. She is passionate about helping moms on the hero's journey of motherhood. She desires to build up a community of families embracing a whole-person approach to life and learning, and being "in the world, but not of the world."
